Summary

State Bank of India's scale, more than 200 years of history and the country's largest customer base, did not automatically translate into appeal among India's millennial banking customers, prompting the launch of YONO as a dedicated digital banking platform. SBI approached the challenge of modernising a legacy institution's customer experience while competing against a wave of digital-first neobanks and fintech entrants.

YONO's product design spans integration with more than 80 e-commerce platforms, an AI-enabled customer support chatbot and a streamlined personal loan process, features that have shaped SBI's share of debit card spending in a highly competitive market. SBI's partnership strategy, including collaborations with ride-hailing, payments and e-commerce platforms, further embeds financial services into everyday customer journeys across the country.

What SBI needs to prioritise next, from interface design to hyper-personalisation, will keep YONO competitive as customer expectations continue to shift, particularly as investment in technology and backend automation becomes the deciding factor for a bank of this scale well into the next decade.

Can India's largest public sector bank out-innovate the digital-native players competing for the same millennial customer base?
