Telcos in Asia – 2020 a year in review

Asia's telecom operators navigated an unusually turbulent 2020, as pandemic-driven disruptions to travel, roaming revenue, and device sales collided with surging demand for mobile data and remote connectivity tied to remote working and online schooling. Only about half of operators managed to sustain positive revenue growth through the first three quarters of the year, with performance diverging sharply between well-penetrated developed markets and emerging economies where mobile broadband filled gaps left by weaker fixed infrastructure.

China and India led the region in absolute revenue gains, while challenger operators in Indonesia capitalised on the shift toward mobile-first connectivity, and many operators across the region rolled out unlimited data packages to meet rising appetite for over-the-top content. Meanwhile, 5G momentum continued to build across a dozen Asian markets including China, South Korea, Japan, and several Southeast Asian economies, with early signs of monetisation emerging even as the pandemic reshaped consumer behaviour around data usage, digital services, and content consumption, and some operators launched digital-only sub-brands to engage a new generation of customers.

Beyond the consumer side, telcos accelerated their pivot toward enterprise and B2B revenue as connectivity-only growth slowed, pursuing acquisitions to build system-integration capabilities and deepening partnerships with hyperscalers to capture new edge-computing and cloud-adjacent opportunities, including AI-powered use cases in manufacturing and retail, emerging from accelerated enterprise digital transformation.
